In my life and work with dogs, I have very few rules. One rule I am not compromising about is that nobody -human or dog or anyone else- should feel unsafe in their own home.

The first question I try to answer when approaching each intra-household aggression case is: is it possible to create a situation where the dogs feel safe in each other's presence?

The whole working plan then develops around the answer to this question. Sometimes it's easier - the answer is a "Yes!" followed by a list of conditions and action points we can follow. Sometimes the answer is "We don't know" and a careful, 100% safe process of testing starts, learning about what the dogs (and the humans!) need to feel safe.

Because solving the conflict is not about obedience, counterconditioning, exposure, or forever management. We are working with relationships, and our role as educators and professionals is to guide each family members into rebuilding or reshaping their relationship so they are safe. And this work cannot be delegated to tools - be them e-collars or markers & treat pouches.

On this masterclass, we'll discuss how to guide dog guardians into -yes- showing their dogs that they are going to keep them safe and how to facilitate reconciliation between their dogs. But also, how to really see their dogs and what they are trying to communicate and achieve through conflict, and the role they can play in mediating it.

Lastly, we will observe how, as professionals, we have to take everyone's emotions into account - not just the dogs' but also the humans'. Because, whether they realise it or not, living in a household where conflict is the norm takes a massive toll on dog guardians and we need to put them in the best position to support their dogs.

Ready? It's going to be an extensive and intense class ;)

So much insight packed into this! I've been trying to figure out why the quadrant doesn't make sense for reactivity moments and it all made sense when you said dogs aren't thinking of consequences in high emotional states.

WHAT dog trainers & trainees say

Yesterday I watched a great webinar on separation anxiety by Punk Mutts, quite a few interesting insights! A totally different approach than your usual methods, I would highly encourage all my followers with rescues and village type dogs to follow (...) There's a reason traditional methods don't work with those type of dogs.

I just followed up with a reactivity client and the first thing she said was "I don't know what kind of witchcraft you're working, but..." and then proceeded to tell me how their dog would start barking at something, they'd go offer support, then she'd just huff at the trigger and leave it alone afterward!
