rethinking force-free

Wonder why counter-conditioning and R+ did not work on your rescue dog?

I decided I wanted to be force-free but I also knew I was not resonating with the narrative about "behaviour modification" that saw changing dogs at the centre of training efforts, instead of listening to them. Seeing dogs voicing discomfort, fear, frustration, and concern and responding by offering them treats instead of solutions just didn't make sense to me.

So I started studying alternatives to relying on operant conditioning and the punishment/reinforcement quadrant. My approach is science-based and grounded in the study of dogs’ social behaviours and their relationship with humans. It revolves around building a sense of security associated with the social group that enables social learning, emotional regulation, and relying on relationships and effective communication rather than treats.

Of course, I use treats and play to teach tricks and skills to foster a rewarding learning process - they are just not the solution to real-life emotional and social issues.

To sum it all up, I might not be the right trainer if you want to “fix your dog” or "solve a problem". But I am here for you if you want to understand your dog, figure out what your relationship is missing, how you can leverage your relationship to support your dog in coping with challenges, and socialise your dog (puppy or adult) effectively. Also, seriously, learning tricks is amazing so I’m here for that too ;)
